Peradaban berkembang di tepi-tepi kumpulan air (danau dan sungai) yang dapat menyokong kehidupan. Pada tahun 3000 SM, telah muncul peradaban di lembah Mesopotamia (dataran di antara sungai Tigris dan Efrat) di Timur Tengah,[1] di tepi Sungai Nil Mesir,[2][3][4] dan di peradaban Lembah Sungai Indus.[5][6][7] Selain itu pada masa itu peradaban juga muncul di lembah Sungai Kuning.
